Monday, August 13. 2007Hospice
Hello, everyone. We spoke today with the hospice folks who will be adding an additonal layer of comfort care and pain management expertise to Chloe's treatment. It looks like she will be remaining here at INOVA for the hospice, as we have formed bonds with many of the staff members here. She continues to touch lives and hearts, and we have been hearing from people all over the world who have visited her website. Something good is going to happen.
Friday, August 10. 2007UpdateChloe is on a morphine drip and oxygen right now. The doctors are in pain management mode, although it seems like she is still in a lot of pain as the blasts push on her bones from the inside out. There is quite a bit of swelling as the fluids leak out of her veins into the tissue. It's tough to watch, to be honest. However, the outpouring of prayer around the globe has been amazing and very uplifting. Thank you all, as we continue to pray for a miracle. Current addresses: Ronald McDonald House c/o The Newbolds 3312 Gallows Road Falls Church, VA 22042 or, our home address (when we go home every few days): The Newbolds 66 Payne Street Charles Town, WV 25414 richard.d.newbold@gmail.com Wednesday, August 8. 2007Results of the bone marrow aspiration
Hi all. We talked to the doctor today, but we were not given an exact percentage of blasts. However, blasts were seen and the marrow was thick and difficult to remove. That is an indication of having significant blasts in her bone marrow. We were told that the bone marrow transplant at Duke is not an option because she clearly has more than 25% blasts in her bone marrow.
Please pray for her. She is still in a lot of pain and is getting continual Morphine. They tried a different pain medication last night because the Morphine wasn't working. Shortly afterwards her respiration and blood pressure dropped low. She was also breathing irregularly. So now it appears that we will only be able to use Morphine. They increased her dosage and that seems to have helped, but she is still in pain. She doesn't want to be touched or moved. She is only tolerating soft rubbing and kisses. The X-ray however showed that her lungs no longer appear to be collapsed at the bottom. We thank God for that! Please pray for a healing miracle for Chloe. Pray that the Holy Spirit will cleanse her blood and that all the blasts will die. Pray that He will touch her bone marrow and that it will begin to produce only healthy cells. Pray that every part of her that has been effected by leukemia or chemo will be healed and restored to wholeness so that she can live like a toddler should. Pray for every one that is praying for Chloe that they will be blessed and receive a large measure of faith so that we will all believe in this miracle that we are asking God for. Please pray for Rick and me to keep our faith strong no matter what lies ahead. Thank you all so much for your love and prayers. Tuesday, August 7. 2007Waiting on results
Hi all. We are still waiting on the results of her bone marrow aspiration. We are supposed to find out today and then have a family meeting with the doctor. Please lift Chloe up in prayer. She is in a lot of pain. They think that it is leukemic pain. The blasts are larger than regular blood cells and when you get a lot of them it causes bone pain. She is also retaining small amounts of fluid. We were told that it could be from overcrowding of the blasts that are causing her capillaries to leak into her interstitial space. She is also requiring oxygen when she sleeps because her levels are dropping too low. Her lungs have a small area that has collapsed at the bottom.
Seriously, when you pray for her please ask God for a healing miracle! We are at that point and she needs your prayers! Pray that the Holy Spirit will cleanse her body of the blasts and that her bone marrow will begin to produce healthy red blood cells and healthy platelets. Pray that He will breathe the breath of life into her lungs and repair them. Pray that He will ease her pain and heal her capillaries. Pray that He will heal every part of her that has been harmed by the chemo and leukemia. Also pray that every one praying will be given an increased measure of faith to believe without any doubt that God will heal her. We ask that you pray that His perfect will to be done in our lives. But keep praying without ceasing for a miracle. That is how he asks us to pray. Thank you all so much for your prayers! We love you all! Monday, August 6. 2007Bone marrow aspiration
Chloe's next bone marrow aspiration will be performed tomorrow (Tuesday) at 9 a.m. Please pray for a good report! Also, please pray for Chloe because she has been in a lot of pain. She has been getting Morphine around the clock to try to control it. Her right eye lid is also very swollen and she is running fevers again. She still doesn't have an immune system.
Please continue to pray for and believe in a healing miracle for Chloe. We are still staking our claim on God's promises for healing and we are still believing He will hear and answer our prayers! Thank you all for your prayers for Chloe! We love you all so much! Psalm 103 1-Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name 2-Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits- 3 who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, 4 who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, 5 who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's. Matthew 4:23-25 23Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. 24News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed, and he healed them. 25Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis,[a] Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him. Matthew 8:16 16When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. Matthew 12:15 15Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. Many followed him, and he healed all their sick, Matthew 14:35-37 35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him 36and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed. Luke 4:40 40When the sun was setting, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them. Luke 8:47 47Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. Acts 4:10 10then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. Acts 5:16 16Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed. Acts 9:34 34"Aeneas," Peter said to him, "Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and take care of your mat." Immediately Aeneas got up. John 10:10 The thief comes to only steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. Praise God! Please continue to pray for Rick and me. Pray that we will keep our faith and continue to expect a miracle. Pray that we will be filled with the Holy Spirit so that we will be led in all of our upcoming decisions! Thank you! Sunday, August 5. 2007Blast Fluctuation
Chloe's daily blast counts have been fluctuating, which is normal. We are praying for a downward trend. She has had a low-grade fever the last several days in addition to other more serious side effects. Today there was an ice cream party on the floor. Chloe slept through it, but Dad was able to get away for a few minutes and grab a bowl. I am also trying to get sponsors for a couple of laptops and wireless broadband cards so that parents will have Internet access while they are stuck in the rooms for weeks or months. If anyone knows any businesses willing to donate to the hospital, please let me know. Thanks again for keeping us in your prayers.
Wednesday, August 1. 2007Another Bone Marrow Aspiration
Next week, the doctor will be performing another bone marrow aspiration to determine the level of leukemic blasts in the marrow. The level in the blood may not be an accurate indicator, as the leukemic cells may be cleverly hiding in the marrow and regrouping rather than streaming in the blood. An issue we are facing is the lifetime usage cap on the various chemotherapy drugs, which are toxic and at certain levels destroy the heart, liver, etc. However, we continue to pray that the blasts will be gone when they check next week. Thank you for your continued prayer and support.
Friday, July 27. 2007Results of bone marrow aspiration
Hi everyone. We apologize for the delay in posting todays results. The results came back that she has 75 to 80% leukemic blasts in her bone marrow. That of course means that the last round of chemo was also ineffective in ridding Chloe's marrow of the leukemia. We are now faced with three options. There is one more chemotherapy agent that we have not yet tried. It is a newer drug and has less efficacy in the general population than the others we have tried. We have been told that it is a potent drug and that the side effects could potentially be worse than what she has had so far with a small chance of remission. Our next option is to take her home with drugs that will prolong her life for an uncertain amount of time. We would take her to the doctor's office for transfusions to support her. Our final option is to take her home with no supportive care and let the leukemia run its course. At this point she has a bacterial infection that has to be cleared before anything else can be done. She is receiving two different antibiotics to clear it out. They think that her port might be infected. They have been putting TPA in her port to break down any blood/bacteria and drawing it back out with a syringe. Cultures were sent to the lab today at 5:00 p.m. to see if there was bacteria in her port. She also spiked a fever tonight and her feet, hands, and mouth turned blue. They dropped a bolus (fluid ran at a high pace) to speed up her heart rate to increase circulation. They also gave her oxygen for about an hour. She perked up after that and seems to feel a lot better. She is still running a low grade fever. Continue to pray for the healing of the bacterial infection.
Please keep us in your prayers as we have some really difficult decisions to make in the days ahead. We want above all else to do God's will for Chloe's life as well as for ours. We are still praying for a miracle and we will not stop! We believe God is still the God of miracles! We believe God is still alive! God is more than capable of healing Chloe! We love Chloe so much, but God loves her more! God knows what is best for all of us. She belongs to God and we are so blessed that God chose us to be her parents. She is so special! She radiates the love of God. Please continue to pray for God's healing miracle in Chloe! God will heal her if it is His will! I will not believe otherwise. Don't lose faith and give up on Chloe. She needs your prayers of healing now more than ever! Pray that God will take Chloe's diseased blood and marrow and replace them with His perfect, holy blood and marrow. Believe He can and He will do this miracle for Chloe. If He choses not to then we will know that it was not His will and we will accept that and trust that He knows what is best for our lives. Until that happens I will not stop asking Him constantly for a miracle! I will not stop expecting a miracle until God tells me to. I pray that all of you will stand in agreement with me. "For surely I know the plans I have for you,' says the Lord, ' plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope…when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you." (Jeremiah 29:11-12) Thank you all so much for your prayers! You have touched our hearts so deeply and we appreciate each and everyone of you more than you could possibly know. Just keep on praying for a healing miracle!! I will be posting healing scriptures and I ask that you meditate over them and lift up Chloe and anyone else that may need healing before our Lord. Also continue to pray for the complete healing of Kennedy Garcia. Pray for God tom strengthen her family. Pray that God will guide and direct the doctors to choose the right medications for her. Keep her free from infections and preserve her little body from the unwanted side effects of the chemo. We thank God for Kennedy and her family! They are such a blessing! Wednesday, July 25. 2007Prayer today between 3:00 and 3:30 p.m. EST
Hi all. Please remember to pray for Chloe today between 3:00 and 3:30 p.m. We will be laying hands on her and praying for healing for her at that time. We want to say thank you to everyone that continually prays for Chloe. We appreciate your prayers, love, and support more than words could ever express.
Right now we are playing the waiting game with Chloe. She is receiving antibiotics for the bacterial infection that she has. She has been running a low grade fever and has been crying and whimpering a lot. They gave her Morphine yesterday because she was crying uncontrollably. She slept good, but still appears to be in pain and just isn't quite herself. We also found out yesterday that she has blasts showing up in her blood again. They will not know if it is Leukemic blasts or immature cells from her Neupogen shots until the bone marrow results on Thursday. Please pray hard for Chloe! Thursday is a huge day for our family and we need all of the prayers we can get. Please pray for her healing constantly through out the day today. Thank you all so much! UPDATE ON BLASTS: She has 88% blasts showing up in her blood today. The doctors do not feel that it is from her Neupogen shots. They feel it is Leukemic blasts because there are so many of them. Please pray for a healing miracle! Monday, July 23. 2007Prayer for Chloe from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m. EST on Wednesday, July 25th
We have made plans with a local pastor to come out and lay hands on Chloe on Wednesday, July 25th at 3:00 to 3:30 p.m. We will be joined by one of the other mothers on Chloe's unit. This mother has strong faith and is such a blessing to us! There will be four of us laying hands on and praying for Chloe.
We know that you can not be there to join us in laying on hands, but please stop what you are doing at some point between 3:00 and 3:30 and say a prayer for Chloe. Pray that God will heal her and restore her to wholeness. Pray that the Holy Spirit will drive out all of the leukemic blasts from her bone marrow and that she will be in complete remission on Thursday. Also pray that He will rid her of the bacterial infection that she currently has. Pray that He will heal her and that she will be able to continue her special mission on this Earth to build up His kingdom. Pray that she will live a long, healthy, happy, and spirit filled life! Thank God for healing Chloe! Ask all of these things according to His will. Remember, the doctor has given her a 10% chance of survival. We really need prayer for Chloe. I don't know how she'll survive without God's divine intervention. If God leads you to do so please fast and pray for Chloe starting tonight until Thursday at noon. We appreciate all of your prayers so much. There is so much power in our prayers! We especially appreciate those of your who are joining us in fasting for her healing. We appreciate so much that you will make yourself uncomfortable and make sacrifice for Chloe's healing. We'll be praying that God will bless all who are fasting with renewal, increased faith, and a deeper love of God. We love you all and thank you all for your prayers and support. Monday, July 23. 2007Update on bone marrow aspiration from 7-11-07
Hi all! I just realized that we had not posted an update concerning Chloe's last bone marrow aspiration. I had posted that she had blasts in her blood and that they were going to do a bone marrow aspiration to see what was going on. The bone marrow that was performed on Wednesday July 11th revealed that she had 66% leukemic blasts in her bone marrow. The last round of chemo was ineffective. The doctor also told us that if she had to give Chloe a percentage of survival she would have to say 10%. We are not listening to percentages and pray that none of you will either. Our God is still the God of miracles and we are still expecting a miracle! We are only telling you about the percentage so that you will know exactly what we are hearing and when she is healed we will all know that it was the work of God. Also, so you will know how much she still needs your prayers.
On a more positive note they found a donor for her! She has two bags of umbilical cord blood waiting on her at Duke. One bag is a 5 out of 6 match and the other bag is a perfect 6 out of 6 match! We thank God and praise God for answering all of our prayers. Like I said before we are on God's time table. Pray for our patience and strength as we wait on Him. Since Chloe's last round of chemo was ineffective she went through another treatment called FLAG. The blasts have cleared from her blood, but we do not yet know the results of her bone marrow. Thursday they will be doing another bone marrow aspiration to see if it worked. Please pray that she will be in full remission on Thursday! She only has to be 25% in remission to go to Duke for her bone marrow, but I want every one to pray for a full remission. The closer she is to remission before the bone marrow transplant the greater the chance of getting rid of this disease! So please pray for full remission on Thursday if it be God's will. We are also waiting to find out if they are going to remove her port that had infection around it. They are waiting on the results of the bone marrow because they may decide to leave it in if she is not in remission. If she is in remission they will have to remove it anyway because she will need a different type of central line for the bone marrow transplant. So basically, please pray that she will be in remission on Thursday and for her bacteria infection to completely clear out of her system. Also, please pray for Rick and I to get rest and to keep our faith strong. Thank you all so much for all of the love, support, and prayers. May God bless you all! You mean so much to us! Also, don't forget to look at Chloe's latest photo entries. They are titled "Chloe 23 months at home" and "Happy Birthday Chloe!" Sunday, July 22. 2007Bacterial Infection
We were discharged to the Ronald McDonald house, but were only there for four hours before we noticed the area around Chloe's port was red and puffy. We were re-admitted, and it was discovered after an ultrasound and some blood work that she has a bacterial infection. We are hoping that it clears up and that the bone marrow test on Thursday will reveal that she is back in remission so that she can have a stem cell transplant performed at Duke University. These are not the controversial fetal stem cells, but rather are derived from umbilical cord blood. We appreciate the efforts of everyone who has been getting enrolled in the bone marrow registry (www.marrow.org). Please continue enrolling, because Chloe or someone else may need it later. God bless.
Tuesday, July 10. 2007Blasts in Chloe's Blood
We found out today that leukemic blasts were found in Chloe's blood when her CBC (complete blood count) was sent to the lab. This is the first time that blasts have been found in Chloe's blood. Previously it has only shown up in her marrow. She will be receiving a platelet transfusion tomorrow (Wednesday) around 2:00 a.m. Around 8:00 a.m. the doctor will be performing a bone marrow aspiration to see what is going on in her marrow. It does not appear that the last round of chemo was effective. We will know more tomorrow after the procedure. We know that this is God's will because we have all prayed that He will fill her with His Holy Spirit and remove all disease and negativity. If anything remains we know that it is by His will alone. We are not giving up hope and we are not losing our faith! Please continue to pray for Chloe's complete healing and restoration of health. Pray that God will lead the doctors to find the drugs that will work to rid Chloe of this disease! We also know that it may not be God's will to heal Chloe. We are not ignorant to that, but we are going to continue to pray for and expect a healing miracle for Chloe. Pray that Chloe will be healed and that God will receive all of the glory! Help us to remember that with God all things are possible!
1 John 5:13-15 13- I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14- This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, he hears us. 15- And if we know that He hears us-whatever we ask-we know that we have what we asked of Him. NIV We can only see where we are right now, but God holds the keys to the future and has a plan. Please continue to pray for God to deliver a healing miracle for Chloe and that she will be completely healed. We may not always state it, but we ask ALL things according to His will for our lives. Also, please pray for Kennedy Garcia. Kennedy also has Down's Syndrome and was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in April. She is in round 4 of her chemo. She is on a different protocol because she is allergic to AraC. Pray that God will guide the doctors to choose the right drugs for her. Also pray that God will pour His Holy Spirit out on her to preserve her from the unwanted side effects of the chemo and restore her to health. Please remember her when you pray for Chloe. Pray that these two special, beautiful little girls will receive a miracle from God and will be able to meet one day. I had exchanged emails with her mother in the past when we were at Ft. Campbell, KY. We moved before we had a chance to meet them. I just found out about her diagnosis. Pray for both of our little angels. Thank you all for your faithful prayers and support! Don't forget to sign our guestbook. It means so much to us! Love, Kristy, Rick, and Chloe Saturday, July 7. 2007Happy Birthday Chloe!
Today is Chloe's 2nd birthday as many of you know. She is still in the hospital receiving care for the side effects that she encountered as a result of the last round of chemo. She spiked two fevers, but to date nothing has grown in her blood cultures. She is receiving antibiotics as a precaution since she is still very neutropenic (without an immune system). Her calorie count is also being watched because she wasn't taking in enough calories. She is taking an appetite stimulant twice a day and that seems to be helping. Her IV fluids were cut back and we have seen an improvement with her intake of oral fluids. She was supposed to have a feeding tube put in yesterday, but since her appetite has picked up some the doctor decided to reevaluate her on Monday. Pray that she will continue to eat well and gain weight. It appears that she is getting enough calories at this point, but the nutricionist will confirm that on Monday. Other than that she is doing well and is once again in good spirits! She had a few rough days, but seems to be over the hump. However, she still doesn't have an immune system and her counts are still dropping. She will be supported through transfusions as she has in the past. Pray for quick recovery of her counts so that she can go to the next round of chemo. It's important that she gets her next round in a timely manner because the success of the treatments will be more favorable. Also we will not know if she is in remission until she recovers and undergoes the next bone marrow aspiration. Please just keep her in your prayers for complete remission and complete healing. Pray that God will restore her health and make her whole once again. We thank God that He has been with her so far and carried her safely through all that she has been through. We thank God that He has made her such a strong, beautiful little girl. She's an inspiration to us everyday. We thank you all for your prayers and support. You all make an incredibly difficult situation more bearable!
Chloe is having a birthday party tomorrow in the playroom in her unit. We are having an Elmo theme because she loves Elmo. We will post pictures as soon as we have time. Pray that she'll feel good on her birthday and be reborn to good health. Once again, thank you all for your prayers! Keep praying for a healing mircale for Chloe! Tuesday, July 3. 2007Periodic Update
Hello, everyone. Chloe was dehydrated there for awhile and wasn't eating or drinking much. She had some other side effects as well. She continues to surprise us each day as she grows and learns, even though she is in the hospital. The staff really likes her and continues to take good care of her. Thank you all for the continued thoughts and prayers. God bless America as we roll into the 4th of July.
